As if typical Friday rush hour traffic is not bad enough, drivers should expect an additional wrench today: Game 5.
Yes, the Texas Rangers play the Houston Astros at 4 p.m. today at Globe Life Field in Game 5 of the ALCS. Currently tied 2-2, the game is certain to draw a packed house, frenzied fans and plenty of traffic to Arlington.
That could mean gridlock along Interstate 30, State Highway 360 and nearby streets. Here are some tips to navigate traffic.
What’s the best route?
The most direct routes to the entertainment district are I-30 and Highway 360, but Arlington police suggest drivers use a variety of exits rather than those closest to the venues. Traffic is less congested south of the district, so drivers might want to consider using I-20 to get to Arlington, then traveling north to their destination.
Tips for going to the game
Arrive early. Parking lots will open at 12:30 p.m., and gates open at 1:30 p.m. Traffic tends to be heaviest about an hour before the game starts, so get there early and enjoy the pre-game atmosphere.
Have a plan. Pre-paid parking is sold out, but parking is available for purchase on-site with debit and credit cards until lots reach capacity. Fans might want to try to figure out a parking plan and backup plan before leaving home. That way, they can head directly to the parking lot instead of driving around in search of a spot. Street parking around the stadium is be permitted.
Be patient. Remember that a lot of people will arrive at once. Drivers should expect traffic control measures like lane closures and temporary one-way streets. Leaving Arlington the same way you arrived might not be possible.
Be safe. When walking from parking lots to and from venues, cross the street at designated spots. And if you plan to drink alcohol, plan ahead to arrange a ride after the game. Ride share services like Uber and Lyft will have designated drop-off and pick-up spots.
And for other drivers
If you’re not going to the Rangers game, do yourself a favor and avoid the area, if possible.
