DETROIT -- Riley Greene will get the day off and Kerry Carpenter will get a rare start against a left-handed pitcher on Wednesday afternoon.
The Tigers (21-21) and Marlins (12-32) will play at 1:10 p.m. at Comerica Park.
In addition to Greene, catcher Jake Rogers; and infielders Zach McKinstry and Colt Keith will be available off the bench.
Tigers manager A.J. Hinch said he wanted to give Greene a rest. With an off day on Thursday, he also wanted to avoid a situation in which Carpenter goes three days without playing.
“I’ve never been anti-lefty for Carp, even though I know it feels like it because I hit for him a lot,” Hinch said. “But you guys would hit for him too with Andy and Vierling on the bench.”
On the mound, Tigers right-hander Casey Mize (1-1, 3.58 ERA) will face Marlins lefty Trevor Rogers (0-6, 6.57).
Mize allowed one run on five hits in six innings in his most recent start on May 10 against the Houston Astros. The only damage against him was Kyle Tucker’s solo homer in the sixth inning.
Rogers was drafted by the Marlins with the 13th overall pick in 2017 (five spots ahead of the Tigers’ Alex Faedo).
He was a rotation regular for Miami from 2020-2022 but missed most of last season with a biceps injury. He’s off to a rough start in 2024 and has been hit hard in his last two outings, one of which was a 20-4 loss to Oakland.
