Day one at Augusta provided a contrasting tale of two former champions. Title-holder Sergio Garcia capitulated dramatically, while Jordan Spieth made a commanding start.

It was the par five hole 15 - 'Firethorn' - that witnessed the worst of Garcia's remarkable meltdown. The Spaniard hit five shots into the water, ending up with a 13. Despite a birdie at the 16th, he would finish with an 81. His title defence is surely over.

Spieth, on the other hand, eagled the eighth and fired five birdies in succession on the back nine to card a 66. The 24 year-old end up two shots ahead of Tony Finau, remarkably fit enough to compete a day after dislocating his ankle, and Matt Kuchar.

Interestingly, no former champion has won after leading the Masters after their opening round since Jack Nicklaus did so in 1972. Ten men have tried and failed in the meantime.

Can Spieth maintain his form on Friday at Augusta> A pack of seven men, including Rory McIlroy, on three under will be out to chase him down.

Tracking Tiger

Tiger Woods begins today on one over, but that could have easily been far rosier. Take a look through the highlights of his first round.

If you missed these goodies earlier this week, he's a graphic on how the 42 year-old has remodeled his swing:

And here is James Corrigan's piece on his resurgence:

Man of the people

Another nice shot from the opening day, here. Tony Finau will never forget his first appearance at the Masters. His ankle stood up well enough for him to card a 68 yesterday.

Round two pin placement

Classy

An excellent response from Sergio Garcia.

Omen?

Jordan Spieth will, obviously, be hoping to defy this trend.

Golden oldies

A lovely image from yesterday. Honorary starters Jack Nicklaus (78) and Gary Player (82) share a joke.

Just the 27 majors between them.

What a shot

This was a freakishly good putt by Louis Oosthuizen on the 16th yesterday.

The South African, who tied for second back in 2012, recorded a one-under round.

Back to it

A champion in 2015, Jordan Spieth starts day two at Augusta with a two-shot lead courtesy of a six-under round to start the tournament.

This is a helpful round-up of that strong opening from Spieth. He eagled the eighth and fired five birdies in succession on the back nine to card a 66 and end up two shots ahead of Tony Finau, remarkably fit enough to compete a day after dislocating his ankle, and Matt Kuchar.

Just as Spieth excelled,  Sergio Garcia sank to a disastrous round of 81 that featured a 13 (THIRTEEN) on the par five 15th hole. He put five balls in the water.

You can read the view of golf correspondent James Corrigan right here. "From green jacket to straitjacket" is an exceptional line.

This is a lovely, interactive illustration of the hole - named  'Firethorn' - that hosted the Spaniard's capitulation. Not that Garcia will be too keen to examine it.

We are about an hour and a half away from the the start of day two. England's Ian Poulter is in one of the earliest groupings, going off at 1.52pm BST. Tiger Woods begins his second round, all being well, at 6.27pm.

Let the Masters video team gee you up.
