TennisSection previews the 2022 Atlanta Open as Tommy Paul takes on Jack Sock in the first round on Monday, July 25th, 2022.
There will be fireworks as early as day one at the Atlanta Open as the flamboyant Tommy Paul faces wild card Jack Sock in an entertaining first-round matchup. Who will prevail is this all-American clash?
The Atlanta Open has not been a happy hunting ground for Tommy Paul, but that could change this week if he plays his cards right. He has never received a main draw wild card at this tournament in six previous visits, failing in the qualifying rounds five times. His lone appearance in the main draw was a monumental one as he reached the quarterfinals in 2017. At 25, he will be bidding to win a match in these parts in five years. Can he knock fellow American Jack Sock?
Jack Sock, for his part, is working towards re-entering the top 100 at this week’s Atlanta Open. And so far, that goal is within reach after a successful season at the Challenger level. He won the Savannah Challenger at the start of May on home soil, whilst also finishing runner-up at the Ilkey Challenger to Zizou Bergs. Despite falling short in his quest to land a Wimbledon main draw wild card, he played exceptionally in qualifying at Roehampton before going on to reach the third round at the grass-court Major. Sock will now turn his attentions at the North American hard court season as the US Open looms into view.
Tommy Paul and Jack Sock have not played each on the ATP Tour. Paul has not lost in the first round at any hard court tournament this season, which bodes well for his chances of progressing. But the Atlanta Open is one his least productive events as mentioned at the top of the article. And with Jack Sock finding form in the midst of a resurgent season, this could turn into a very difficult opener for the fifth seed.
