Sorribes-Tormo Reached Quarter-Finals Last Year
Last year, Sorribes-Torma made the quarter-finals in this tournament, emulating her best showing in a WTA 1000 event, a few weeks after she dumped the then world number one Ashleigh Barty out of the Tokyo Olympics.
However, she has not played on a hard court since losing in the first round in Miami, staying with her preferred surface of clay for as long as possible.
That yielded her another major quarter-final in Madrid and she also reached the last eight in Lausanne.
In her most recent tournament in Palermo, she went one better and reached here first semi-final of 2022 before losing to the eventual winner, Irina Begu of Romania.

Liu Makes Her Debut in Toronto
A former junior world number one after winning the Wimbledon girls’ singles title, Liu reached her first senior final in May in Morocco, beaten on clay by the Italian Martina Trevisan.
That same month she won a Challenger event on the same surface in France, and, a month later, won a doubles title at the same level in Italy.
Since that purple patch, results have been harder to come by, although she did make the first round of Wimbledon for a second successive year.
She will be making her debut in this event, having come through two rounds of qualifying, having beaten the local woman Victoria Mboko, and then Ellen Perez of Australia.
