Grigor Dimitrov is the 17th seed here at the US Open and is ranked 19th on the ATP Tour. The former Semi-Finalist here in New York has been having a solid but unspectacular season so far, but has really struggled in the second half of the season so far. A poor 2-4 record in the US hard court swing will not inspire any confidence, and his experience will be vital here against Steve Johnson. Questions remain about his fitness, as he retired from his last match in Winston-Salem due to injury, so it will be interesting to see what shape he is in here.

Steve Johnson is ranked #59 on the ATP Tour and is unseeded here at the US Open. The American has been having a resurgence of sorts recently after a rough past few seasons, and has spent quite a lot of time on the hard courts this summer. Two Quarter-Finals appearances will have given him lots of confidence, and there is no denying that he is entering New York in better form that his more celebrated opponent. Johnson is still the underdog here, but things are setting up nicely for him to pose a serious challenge here, and the crowd will be hoping to drag him over the edge.

This is likely to be a much closer match than the rankings suggest, with Grigor Dimitrov struggling for form, and possibly still carrying a niggling injury, and Steve Johnson being in pretty good form this month. Dimitrov is clearly the better player when fit, but Johnson has the support of the New York crowd, which will count for a lot. I am expecting this to be quite close, but i’m going to back the Bulgarian provided he is fully healthy. Due to all of these question marks I would probably avoid this match altogether, but if I had to pick, two markets that I don’t hate are each man to win a set, and Dimitrov to win overall.
