Mertens Rebounds to Down Papamichail

World no. 42 Elise Mertens bounced back after dropping the first set to oust Greece’s Despina Papamichail and advance to the last eight in Monastir.

This will be only the third time this year that Mertens will be playing in a singles quarterfinal at a WTA tournament. The Belgian had earlier made it to the last eight in St. Petersburg and Strasbourg. But she also played well in the majors reaching the last 16 at the Australian Open, French Open and Wimbledon.

Mertens began her campaign at the Jasmin open with a 6-1, 6-1 thrashing of Romania’s Jaqueline Cristian. She kept the winning record intact in the second round, but had to work hard for the win.

The Belgian had broken early to build a 3-1 lead in the first set, but Papamichail raised her game and broke her twice to take the first set. Mertens made a resounding comeback over the next two sets, breaking the Greek thrice in each set, while dropping just 3 games over the last two sets for a 5-7, 6-1, 6-2 victory.

A six-time champion on the tour from 10 finals, Mertens has not reached a single singles semifinal this season. She has a great chance of reaching her first on Friday.

Uchijima’s Dream Run Continues

Qualifier Moyuka Uchijima got the biggest win of her career as the 21-year-old knocked out World no. 41 Petra Martic in the second round of the Jasmin Open on Thursday to reach her first-ever tour-level quarterfinal.

Uchijima got the solitary break of the first set and then missed out on a match point at 4-5 (40-A) in the second set, allowing the fourth seed to come back from a break down for the second time in the set. However, the Japanese dominated the second set tiebreak to clinch the contest 7-5, 7-6 (7-5).

The Japanese, who had a first round bye in the qualifiers, had made it to the main draw with a straight sets win over Nigina Abduraimova. She carried the momentum into the first round and breezed past Kamila Rakhimova 6-3, 6-3.

Ranked no. 349th at the start of the year, she has been rewarded for her consistency at the lower level with a constant gain in the rankings. Currently ranked no. 124, she will be aiming to become an unlikely semifinalist on Friday.

Mertens v Uchijima Prediction and Tip

Mertens is far more experienced and also knows how to win pressure matches late in tournaments. She won’t take Uchijima lightly but will be the favourite to advance.

Tip: Mertens to win in three sets: 3/1 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
