There’s a lot of intrigue around the main draw of the WTA San Diego Open. WTA Finals spots are still up for grabs and several players here are in with a shot. Add to that the continued comebacks of the likes of Bianca Andreescu and Sofia Kenin and there are plenty of story lines to keep us entertained in the coming days. Madison Keys vs Ellen Perez
Head-to-head: First meeting
Ellen Perez is perhaps a little lucky to be in the main draw after Anna Kalinskaya withdrew from their qualifying match. However, her luck has certainly run out here with a first round draw against Madison Keys. The big-hitting American has returned to something near her best form in 2022 an looks a threat at most tournaments she plays. That will be particularly true here as she plays in front of a home crowd on courts that suit her game. Keys should win this easily.

Martina Trevisan vs Camila Osorio
Head-to-head: First meeting
This is an interesting match up between two clay court stars. Martina Trevisan wowed the world at the French Open when she made it to the semifinals. However, that form hasn’t translated onto other surfaces and she has struggled mightily since. Fortunately for her, she plays against a similarly surface-limited player in Camila Osorio. Trevisan is the higher ranked player but I suspect Osorio has more upside on these courts. She should win a tightly fought contest here.

Sofia Kenin vs Coco Vandeweghe
Head-to-head: 2 – 1 Kenin
This looks an interesting matchup, Kenin will be wary of the similarities between her disappearance on the WTA tour and Coco Vandeweghe’s. That being said, Kenin reached heights her compatriot never did before COVID-19 and other issues took her away from the game. The young, feisty American is now trying to charge back into the picture and San Diego looks the perfect opportunity to do just that. Kenin is yet to show her best, but a tournament in her home country with courts that lend themselves to her counterpunching style may be just what she needs.
