Women's lacrosse wins OAC title

Mount Union's women's lacrosse team won its fifth straight Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament title with an 11-8 win over Capital Saturday at Mount Union Stadium. The Purple Raiders (17-0) awaited the release of the NCAA tournament bracket Sunday night.

Mount Union got a game-high four goals from Ashley Bernardi — three of them in the first half that helped the Raiders build up a 5-2 lead along with a strong game in goal from Mimi Curtis, who had 16 saves.

Marjie McNamara, Katie Elder and Danielle Rohrman all added two goals for Mount Union. Sydney Bumbarger added the other goal.

Capital (14-3) was led by Kailee King and Kathryn Walton, who scored three goals apiece.

Men’s tennis

MASON — No. 1-seed John Carroll defeated No. 2 Mount Union 5-3 in the Ohio Athletic Conference men’s tennis tournament finals on Saturday.

In doubles, Mount Union’s Jackson Schneider and Mark Beebe, and Antonio Massucci and Justin Kelley held John Carroll to scores of 8-2 and 8-1, respectively. The first doubles team of Robert Cross and Zach Teffner won their doubles match in a 9-7 tiebreaking thriller.

Inclement weather conditions moved the singles matches to South Regency Tennis Club in Miamisburg.

Mount Union senior Jackson Schneider went 1-1 on the day, tabbing his 109th career win. Schneider ended his career with a record of 109-34, tying for the fifth most career wins in Mount Union men's tennis history.

Mount Union's 2017-18 season comes to a close with an overall record of 14-4 and 7-1 in the OAC.

Baseball

Mount Union's baseball team split their last Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader of the season as they lost game one 7-4 and won game two 4-0 on senior day against Muskingum on Saturday at 23rd Street Field.

In the UMU victory, senior Noah Skladan throw a gem for the Raiders earning his sixth win of the year. Skladan threw a complete game shutout in his final game giving up four hits with a pair of strikeouts.

Senior Johnny Thombs had a part in all four runs for the Raiders in his final game.

In the opener, Joey Keleman, Christian Stanziano, Billy Goodall and Ryan Boyd had RBIs.

Mount Union’s season ends with a 21-16 overall record and a 9-9 mark in the OAC.

Track & field

AKRON – Mount Union's women's track and field team posted a pair of provisional qualifying marks for the NCAA Championship at the Campbell/Wright Invitational Saturday at The University of Akron.

Freshman Alexianna Johnson posted a season-best mark of 18-feet, 11.75-inches in the long jump which currently sits seventh in the nation in NCAA Division III so far this season.

The other provisional mark came from the 4x100 meter relay team of seniors Katie Goedecke and Steph Donley along with sophomores Daijana Johnson and Rachael Adams to post the nation's sixth-best time in the event at 47.36.

On the men's side, the No. 8 ranked Purple Raiders got three season-best performances from junior Lucas Cooper in the discus (158-5), sophomore Tanner Slack in the high jump (6-5) and the 4x100 meter relay team (41.96) of senior Josh Weber, junior Louis Berry and freshmen Kendall Shadie and Malik Britt.

Mount Union is scheduled to compete next week at the Harrison Dillard Twilight Meet at Baldwin Wallace in Berea.
