Wrexham AFC owners Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds were receiving the Freedom of the Borough award at Wrexham civic hall today, April 10.

The Hollywood owners have been spotted outside Wrexham Guildhall on Llywn Isaf this morning.

Queensway Councillor, Carrie Harper, confirmed the pair were attending the hall to receive the award of Freedom of the Borough.

Councillors voted to confer the freedom of the borough on the owners of Wrexham AFC in recognition of the club’s long and proud history, and the impact the two owners have had in helping to promote Wrexham across the world since they purchasing the football club two years ago.

Appearing at a meeting via Zoom in December 2022, to accept the honour on behalf of the duo, Ryan Reynolds said: “I’m going to try not to be too emotional here.

“We are impossibly grateful for this honour from the council. Wrexham is home to one of the most beautiful stories on earth and I recognise that this is to honour our contribution but I’d also say that the reverse holds true with this town, what it’s given us is immeasurable.

“What it’s given Wales and the rest of the world is immeasurable. Rob and I walked with a pretty crazy idea a few years ago and Wrexham ran with that idea.

“Our goal is now and has always been to uphold the values of the community and this club.”

Although today's ceremony appears to be behind closed doors, eye witness reports indicate that the Welcome to Wrexham documentary team are also onsite.

The pair are rumoured to also be attending today's match against Notts County which is taking place at The Racecourse ground this afternoon.

Wrexham suffered a 3-1 loss at Halifax Town on Friday following a poor second half performance with the Shaymen coming from behind to win.

County, who beat Wealdstone 3-0, took over as leaders on goal difference but the Reds have a game in hand.

With five matches remaining, the quest for automatic promotion is still in Wrexham's hands but this afternoon's showdown between the title rivals could have a big say in who finishes top.
