DETROIT, Mich. (WOOD) — Two bills will be signed into Michigan Law during the NFL Draft in Detroit Saturday.
After House Bills 5527 and 5528 passed the Senate earlier this week and gained House approval Wednesday, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer is set to sign them into law. The bills will “require more comprehensive cardiac emergency response plans in schools, and will require plans for school athletic facilities, at school events, and add a training requirement for athletic coaches,” according to the American Heart Association.
Cardiac Emergency Response Plans outline steps that aim to reduce deaths caused by cardiac arrests. They are particularly important to have in schools, the AHA said.
The bills will be signed at a news conference at Corner Ballpark in Detroit at 11 a.m. Saturday. Spokespeople from the NFL, Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin — who collapsed on-field in January of 2023 — and the CEO of the American Heart Association will be there.
