Hal Steinbrenner told reporters at the owners meetings last month that the Yankees have the ability to sign “whoever we want,” and a caller told Keith that those comments have him dreaming about a 2009-like spending spree to get the Yanks back to their spending spree roots.
Keith believes that there is a good chance of it happening, starting with Juan Soto.
“They will. That’s what Juan Soto wants,” Keith said. “They had the meeting with him in California, and he asked if they’re gonna sign him and that’s it. They know they can’t do that.
“Sign Juan Soto, sign Christian Walker, try to sign Corbin Burnes or Max Fried, and let’s ride.”
According to multiple reports, Soto asked Yankee ownership during his meeting with team brass in California if the team plans to make other adds outside of Soto if they sign him to a long-term deal. Soto was reportedly assured that they would, and Keith believes there is a chance the Yankees lock up Soto, and follow that up with a lot more.
“Corbin Burnes, if you could pair him with Gerrit Cole?” Keith said.
“You need another frontline starter. Cole is gonna be another year older, and you can’t trust Carlos Rodon. So, for me, sign Juan Soto, and you’re not done...see if you can get Corbin Burnes or Max Fried.”
