Giants introduce third baseman Evan Longoria: 'I’m here to win'
The Giants finally introduced prized new third baseman Evan Longoria on Friday, a month after acquiring the longtime Tampa Bay star in a blockbuster deal.
First things first: Longoria will wear No. 10 for the Giants. His former No. 3 was not available — that belongs to former Giants player/manager Bill Terry, whose number is among the 10 retired in franchise history.
Longoria spoke to season-ticket holders before Friday’s news conference at AT&T Park, and said Giants fans were most curious about Longoria’s views on where he fits into a veteran clubhouse that counts Buster Posey and Madison Bumgarner among its faces of the franchise.
“My message was just that I think I’m smart enough to figure out where I fit in here,” said Longoria, who had spent his entire 10-year major league career with the Rays. “The goal is not to ruffle any feathers. I’ve been through the process of having a lot of turnover over the years ... I think my goal is just to make that as seamless as possible and just kind of fit in.”
Longoria said Posey and Bumgarner were the first Giants he reached out to after the trade, letting them know that “I’m here to win” and “follow the examples that you guys have set over the years.”
Longoria was acquired in December in a deal sent infielder Christian Arroyo, outfielder Denard Span and two minor-league pitchers to the Rays.
On Monday, the Giants made their second big trade of the winter, acquiring outfielder Andrew McCutchen from the Pirates.
