Banyana Banyana goalkeeper Andile Dlamini has revealed her all-time favourite FIFA Women’s World Cup heroine who has inspired her the most in her football career. 

Dlamini was speaking ahead of the upcoming Women’s World Cup, due to take place in Australia and New Zealand from July 20 until August 20. 

The Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies goalie, Dlamini, is one of the players who have made the cut to the final 23-woman squad of Banyana set to participate in the much-awaited prestigious tournament.

This will be Dlamini’s second World Cup appearance, having featured in two games when Banyana made its World Cup debut in 2019, which was held in France. 

ANDILE DLAMIN’S FAVOURITE WORLD CUP HEROINE 

‘Sticks’, as she is popularly known within the football circles, divulged that she modelled her attitude on the former USA shot-stopper Hope Solo.

Solo is an American former goal-minder who represented the United States women’s national team between 2000 and 2016. 

To add to that, Solo won THE FIFA World Cup with the USA. She is also a two-time Olympic gold medalist.

“I have always admired and drawn inspiration from former American goalkeeper Hope Solo,” the 2022 WAFCON goalkeeper of the Tournament. 

“Her exceptional skills as a goalkeeper and her ability to command the game was truly remarkable. She demonstrated great resilience and determination, consistently performing at the highest level. 

“Solo’s impact on women’s football and her achievements on the World Cup stage has left a lasting impression on me.”

ANDILE DLAMINI AIMS TO USE HER EXPERIENCE TO LEAD BANYANA BANYANA TO THE PROMISED LAND 

The goalkeeper believes that her experience gained at the previous World Cup will be pivotal in helping South Africa excel. 

“While we acknowledge the experience gained four years ago, this year’s edition presents a different kind of challenge,” she added. 

“There are different hosting countries this time around, and the teams in our group are also different. We understand that each tournament has its challenges and opportunities. We are prepared to adapt and overcome whatever obstacles come our way. 

“Our commitment to success remains unwavering, and we are ready to give our all in pursuit of our goals.”

South Africa is in Group G alongside formidable nations such as Sweden, Argentina and Italy.
