It’s good to be Jake Marisnick today.

After spending his 2023 season with AL Central teams on the outside of the playoff picture, he signed a major-league deal with the Los Angeles Dodgers on Thursday, according to multiple reports. Marisnick was recently placed on waivers by the Detroit Tigers and elected free agency after going unclaimed.

Marisnick signed as a free agent with the Chicago White Sox in January and then was dealt to Detroit for cash in May when outfielder Riley Greene went down with an injury. When Greene returned and pitcher Trey Wingenter was activated off the 60-day injured list, the Tigers DFA’d Marisnick.

The 32-year-old has batted .225/.263/.408 with two home runs and 10 RBI this season. Valued for his defense and speed, Marisnick has a career .228/.281/.385 slash line and will provide the Dodgers with a bench option across all three outfield spots. Los Angeles is first in the NL West with a 51-38 record.

Marisnick was drafted by the Toronto Blue Jays in 2009, but never played a major-league game for them. The journeyman has played in 873 games for eight teams - including six seasons with the Houston Astros and one with the New York Mets in 2020.

The Astros dealt Marisnick to the Mets in December 2019 for two minor leaguers. Marisnick was utilized as a platoon partner for center fielder Brandon Nimmo, hitting .333/.353/.606 in 16 games (34 plate appearances). But his campaign was marred by injury, spending multiple stints on the IL because of hamstring injuries.

“Frustration is really a good word for it,” Marisnick said in September 2020. “That first hamstring [strain] was something that set me back. For me personally, I’m going to push injuries as hard as I can to get back and get playing, and then the next one pops up. It’s been frustrating. I don’t like sitting on the sidelines watching, so this hurts a little bit for me.”
