Jets (2) disappointing first rounders are on thin ice, according to recent list

According to a recent list, the New York Jets have two first rounders on thin ice this season.

According to a recent list, the New York Jets have two first rounders on thin ice this season.

First rounders are given more opportunities to prove their worth compared to other NFL players.

But at some point, time runs out when performance standards are not being reached. This might be the case for two players on the New York Jets: Mekhi Becton and Zach Wilson.

USA Today published a list of 23 recent NFL first-round picks who may be on thin ice heading into the 2023 season. Outside of Becton and Wilson, names that appear on the list includes Washington Commanders defensive end Chase Young and New England Patriots quarterback Mac Jones.

Becton’s 2023 season is pivotal. He must perform to prove he is not a bust.

USA Today NFL reporter Nate Davis had this to say about Becton’s future: “He’s played one game since his 2020 rookie year – injuries, his fluctuating weight and questions about whether he can survive on the left side all tarnishing the prospects of a player drafted 11 overall. His fifth-year option off the table, Becton enters this season with much to prove – but with a great opportunity to restore his value if he can thrive in the new Aaron Rodgers-led offense.”

Becton flashed as a rookie.

He was supposed to protect Wilson, who never developed into the franchise quarterback of the future. Wilson started nine games in 2022– finishing with six touchdowns and seven interceptions– and was benched multiple times. So to fix the quarterback situation, the Jets acquired Aaron Rodgers this offseason.

Wilson’s future is similar to other quarterbacks in the ‘21 class.

“First-rounders two years ago, all three could see their fifth-year options declined next spring,” Davis wrote. “Wilson (Jets) and Lance (49ers), the second and third overall picks, respectively, are relegated to reserve roles after Wilson played himself out of the QB1 job and now backs up Rodgers while Lance’s broken ankle and Brock Purdy’s ascendance led to the North Dakota State product’s demotion.”

Becton and Wilson are both playing against the Cleveland Browns in the NFL Hall of Fame game tomorrow night, which is not a positive sign for their futures. This first NFL preseason game is usually played by rookies and backups competing for spots on the 53-man roster.
