Giants WR could be traded before season, NFL analyst says

The Giants could make a WR trade soon.

The Giants could make a WR trade soon.

Giants wide receiver Sterling Shepard could be on the move soon.

In a recent article from Bleacher Report, which broke down “one player each NFL team should put on the trade block this preseason,” analyst Matt Holder wrote that the Giants’ “abundance of slot receivers” could entice them to trade the 30-year-old.

“The New York Giants currently have an abundance of slot receivers,” Holder wrote via Bleacher Report. “Parris Campbell projects as their starter on the inside while Wan’Dale Robinson enters his second NFL season as the second-stringer, which could leave Sterling Shepard out to dry.

“The 30-year-old has struggled to stay healthy throughout his career, missing 34 games over the last four seasons combined. However, he has been productive when on the field with a career average of 11.2 yards per catch, including 11.8 YPC on a small sample size a year ago. He’s also just two years removed from posting 656 yards and three touchdowns in 12 games.”

Holder went on to say that Shepard’s expiring contract situation (1-year, $1.3 million) and the Giants’ recent wide receiver draft history – Robinson in the 2022 draft, Jalin Hyatt in 2023 – could add extra incentive for GM Joe Schoen to make a move.

Shepard, who has only played 10 games since the end of the 2020 season, has played well in camp this season, but still projects as the last wideout on the depth chart.

In a recent interview with the New York Post, Shepard seemed uneasy about the possibility of leaving the team that drafted him in the second round in 2016.

“I don’t want to play anywhere else,’’ he said via the Post. “I want to retire a Giant. So yeah, I don’t think I would go play anywhere else. I do burn to play, and that’s a tough question, because I feel like I still have something in the tank and this is what I love to do.
