When is Mother’s Day in the United States?

After the holiday was made official, it was declared that Mother’s Day would be celebrated annually on the second Sunday of May. This year, that day falls on Sunday the 12th.

Is Mother’s Day only an American holiday?

Mother’s Day is a cherished tradition celebrated in over 90 countries worldwide, but its origins can be traced back to one determined woman – Anna Jarvis from Philadelphia.

Following her mother’s passing in 1907, Anna held a memorial service in her honor on the second Sunday of May. This act of remembrance sparked a passionate crusade. Anna dedicated herself to establishing a national holiday dedicated to all mothers, tirelessly campaigning for its recognition.

Her efforts proved successful. By 1914, President Woodrow Wilson declared the second Sunday of May as Mother’s Day across the United States and Canada. The holiday’s popularity quickly spread, gaining traction in over 90 countries today.

Is Mother’s Day an American tradition?

Mother’s Day originated from a peace movement led by mothers in the late 19th century. Over time, it evolved into a celebration of motherhood, honoring all the hard work moms do every day.

On Mother’s Day, children often treat their moms to a special breakfast, surprise them with flowers and gifts, and shower them with love and appreciation. In the US alone, over 133 million Mother’s Day cards are exchanged every year!

Many restaurants see a surge in business on Mother’s Day, as families treat their moms to a meal cooked by someone else, giving them a well-deserved break from their usual kitchen duties.
