Pena re-establishing himself in Syracuse offense

The wide receiver, who played in just one game last season due to injury, has already scored five touchdowns in two games this season.

For the third consecutive season, the Syracuse football team is 2-0. This year, they’re doing it behind an explosive offense, including wide receiver Trebor Pena.

He currently leads all SU pass catchers with five touchdowns, scored in wins over Ohio and Georgia Tech.

“Play every play like it’s your last,” Pena said this week as the Orange prepared for tonight’s kickoff at home against Stanford. “That’s all I’ve been doing, really just giving my heart out to the game and for my teammates, and just doing the best I can to help us win.”

Pena’s SU career has been full of injury issues. His 2021 season was cut short due to injury, and last year, he only appeared in one game because of a hamstring issue.

While Pena was recovering, he said he prepared himself for the next opportunity through game study.

“You know, you can't be on the field, so you can't get those physical reps, but you can get the mental reps,” Pena said.

Going from two TDs in his first 27 games with Syracuse to five in his first two games of 2024 alone, Pena has established himself as another weapon alongside Oronde Gadsden and LeQuint Allen. Pena is second on the team to Gadsden in both receptions and receiving yards.

“He’s always been a good football player,” SU head coach Fran Brown said. “Now he’s healthy. It’s nothing opposite; it’s just he’s healthy now.”
